Firehenge Opens Near the Badlands, Bringing a One-Of-A-Kind Roadside Attraction to Interstate 90

South Dakota travelers now have a new reason to pull off Interstate 90.

Firehenge, a larger-than-life circle of vintage fire trucks inspired by the ancient monument Stonehenge, officially opened May 23 near Kadoka. Located just minutes from Badlands National Park, the attraction transforms retired fire apparatus into a roadside experience unlike anything else in the region.

The site also features Doghenge, a companion attraction made up of fire hydrants arranged in a peace-sign design, giving four-legged travelers a destination of their own.

In addition to the truck and hydrant displays, Firehenge offers a place to slow down and enjoy the journey. Visitors can grab a cold beverage, challenge friends to a game of cornhole, relax at picnic tables and browse a gift shop stocked with Firehenge souvenirs and merchandise.

The idea for Firehenge came from longtime collector and Firehouse Brewing Company owner Bob Fuchs, whose passion for preserving historic fire trucks has resulted in one of the largest private collections of firefighting vehicles in the country.

“People have been stopping to take pictures with our fire trucks for years,” said Fuchs. “At some point I thought, if one fire truck gets attention, what would happen if you put a whole circle of them out in the prairie? That’s how Firehenge came to be.”

Standing against the backdrop of South Dakota’s wide-open landscape, Firehenge offers visitors a chance to stretch their legs, take photos and experience a roadside attraction that embraces both history and imagination.

“Road trips are supposed to be fun,” Fuchs said. “You expect to see the Badlands. You don’t expect to see a ring of giant fire trucks in the middle of nowhere.”

Admission is $10 per vehicle plus applicable tax. Each paid vehicle receives a complimentary Firehouse Brewing Company T-shirt redeemable at Firehouse Brewing Company in Rapid City.

Firehenge is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., weather permitting, May-September.
